NASA's upcoming experiment, the Flammability of Materials on the Moon (FM2), is set to ignite a fire on the lunar surface, but it's not just for show. This daring endeavor aims to enhance the safety of future crewed missions to Mars and beyond by understanding how flames behave in the unique conditions of lunar gravity. The experiment is particularly crucial because materials that are not flammable on Earth might burn at lower oxygen concentrations in the moon's gravity, posing a potential hazard for astronauts.
