Lightning strikes and summer storms are a common occurrence in the US, but their impact on outdoor sporting events is a growing concern. Kelsey Malloy, a climate scientist, warns that climate change could exacerbate storm patterns, leading to more frequent lightning strikes. The warming climate is linked to heavier rainfall and stronger rising air, which equals greater electrification of clouds and lightning flash rates. Malloy emphasizes the importance of accurate forecasting and urges fans to take risk warnings seriously.
Heat's Hazards
The heat is another formidable challenge. FIFA has chosen to use stadiums with roofs, air conditioning, or both in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Vancouver to mitigate concerns over storm delays and extreme heat. However, many venues remain open-air, leaving players and fans vulnerable to debilitating temperatures. During the 2025 club tournament, matches were played in scorching heat, with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity making it feel even hotter.
A recent report by a team of climate scientists predicts that a quarter of the scheduled games could be impacted by grueling heat, including the final in New Jersey. FIFA has introduced cooling breaks during each half of the matches, but Doctor Chris Mullington of Imperial College London suggests that some footballers may struggle to maintain their usual intensity. The health risks for fans, many of whom will be consuming alcohol in direct sunlight under heavy heat and humidity, are also a cause for concern.
A group of current and former professional players, led by Morten Thorsby, has called on FIFA to update its heat-stress framework and couple it with consistent climate action. They argue that it would be a missed opportunity if a sport so impacted by the climate crisis doesn't take responsibility in addressing it.
